Program Housing Solution for 1,000 Units (The size of the individual unit should stay within 90 square meters.)
Our life is rapidly changing in all aspects, such as the economy, politics, society and culture. The changes, happening not only in eating habits and clothes, but even in languages, are amazing. The changes in telecommunications, transportation, culture and urban environments we directly experience are the result of more profound changes.

Korea and other Asian countries are taking the lead in these changes, and are accordingly in a state of utter confusion from some perspectives. They are nevertheless developing rapidly. This explosive change is not elective, but is becoming an unavoidable reality for us. And for architects who are to create cities, architecture, and a comfortable living environment for humans, this reality involves a heavy task. This task requires wisdom not only from Asian architects, but also from all architects involved in urban architecture around the world. So if the explosive change is an unavoidable reality, how should architects handle it? Architects are required to have thinking power and technology to handle bigger items and projects faster.

The object of the project is to provide an affordable and livable environment for the explosive demand for housing in this fast-changing world, especially in Korea and the Far East. To find a way to solve the problem, one may reexamine basic issues of architecture such as energy problems, sustainability, an eco-friendly environment, and so on.

Even our understanding of community might need to be reexamined. Also, some participants may reevaluate part of or the entire process of the present housing supply systems, from the building material to the construction industry. The idea might come from very tiny subjects, such as details of a building, or from a macroscopic subject like organizational characteristics of community and space systems.

The program for the project is open, except that the size of the individual unit should stay within 90 square meters. The subject family of the project could be immigrants from farms or a family constantly upgrading their lives. Whoever it may be, they might be someone who is experiencing fast changing life in their economical, social, cultural context of life. The first-stage submission is expected to be a generic form without a site. After the first stage review, final entries will be selected for presentation. A site will be given to the finalists for a site-specific design. They will be invited for the presentation, which is open to the public. They will have a chance to present and defend their design and will participate in the whole jury process, in which the subject of the speed and scope of the changing architectural and urban problems will be discussed.
